Every year prominent members from the business and scientific communities as well as the media and pioneers for a sustainable future convene during the awards ceremony. The GreenTec Awards is celebrating its tenth year this year. The Smart Green Tower by Frey Architekten, a cooperative project with partners Siemens and the Fraunhofer Institute, has landed a slot in the top 3 in the category ProSieben Galileo Wissenspreis.

The Global Awards: Wolfgang Frey received an award in London

The Global awarded Frey Architekten for their ongoing project – “Heidelberg Village” as the Most Outstanding Passive House Design in the World in 2016 on 10th November in London.

The Global Awards have been created to celebrate and reward the best individual and company performances in the over-50s housing sector worldwide. The philosophy of the Awards panel is to recognize the best exemplar in the world. The Awards dinner and presentation was conducted at Conrad London St. James in Broadway, London, UK. The event was a formal presentation to the Global Award winners in the presence of nearly 80 experts who had come from all over the world including Australia and New Zealand.

Wolfgang Frey at the “City of Tomorrow” workshop of Fraunhofer Institute

The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) invited participants to talk about the shape of our common future during their “Morgenstadt” (City of Tomorrow) workshop in Stuttgart on September 27-28, 2016.

The overall topic included how we can make the cities of tomorrow sustainable and livable – a new construction plan should emerge that everyone can develop together. Not only companies and city representatives, but also students and citizens got the chance to actively shape the city of the future with the help of discussion groups, creative workshops, on-the-spot app development, business models or building the first prototypes. A new urban concept can only work if all parties – that is, companies as well as citizens – are equally involved.

Berlin, September 13, 2016 – Architect and urban planner Wolfgang Frey, who won the prize for the initiative „Germany – The Country of Longevity“ („Deutschland – Land des Langen Lebens“) for his Heidelberg Village project in 2015, spoke at this year’s Demografiekongress in Berlin on the topic: „How can architecture stimulate social consciousness?“ In our increasingly mobile world, it is hard for people to develop a sense of responsibility and connection with the place where they live. Architecture plays a significant role in fostering a sense of community.

Wolfgang Frey at the “Old People’s and Nursing Homes of the Future” symposium

Recently, a number of old people’s and nursing homes have been built all across Europe. It has become necessary because of the demographic development. Important factors such location, environment, structure of a building, single and multi-bed rooms, logistic requirements, infrastructure etc. have to be decided right at the planning stage and have a considerable influence on quality and efficiency. Naturally, architecture plays a crucial role in the subsequent activities.

The symposium “Old People’s and Nursing Homes of the Future” will address these organizational, architectural, financial challenges and questions in Lucerne. The aim of this conference is the exchange of experiences between various departments in renovation and new construction of a nursing home.

Biweekly Free Lunch for Everyone at its Heidelberg Village Construction Site

Whoever said there is no such thing as a free lunch? Sustainable architectural firm Frey Architekten has started a soup kitchen initiative at their Heidelberg Village construction site to unite both construction workers and the residents who will be dwelling in the complex they are building. Every other week they offer a free lunch to bring both worker and home dweller closer together.
